Raccoons, Betty Crocker Taters & Such

On Sunday, the humans were very excited to sleep in. To my regret, I started throwing up around 6 AM. (I am okay - I just ate too much stick). The humans think that I must look at vomiting as a no-no because I usually start eating it right away as if to hide the evidence.

Therefore Mom leaps out of bed to get me away from the stuff, and Dad rushes to take care of clean-up.  Mom's solution was to let me out the back door for my morning business, but low and behold there was a little raccoon sleeping at the bottom of the stairs.

Despite living in a rural area, this was our first raccoon encounter.  Even though they are cute, we have heard that sometimes they have rabies, so Mom didn't want me to go outside for fear we would have an argument. She tried to scare it away by knocking on the door, making noise and flipping the light on and off. The little buster just ignored her. The humans then began looking for something soft to throw near the critter, expecting to startle it and make it scurry off. She put me on my leash and took me out front, while Dad took the next action. He threw Mom's garden glove but he didn't budge. Next he tried tossed an empty box of Betty Crocker Butter and Herb instant potatoes near him. Instead of going back to the woods, that little creature just looked up as if to say, "I'm trying to sleep here!" and proceeded to curl up in a tighter ball for more Zzz's.

Awww! Do you think maybe he was sick? Because that seems like pretty unusual behavior for a wild animal. Glad Farley didn't tangle with him!

Bet he would have been fun to play with, Farley. It's too bad that they can be so sick so we can't. We are dieing to know what happened next.

Heehee! I guess your Dad won't be applying for a job with Wildlife Control anytime soon, huh? As an aside about raccoons, many, many, many years ago (back when Mr. Bufus the cat was like 11 or something - so like 9 eons, erm, years, ago), animal control "relocated" a raccoon - not Dad's choice - but didn't realize that Momma Raccoon had left behind babies. So Dad, being the softie that he is, took in the babies, and raised them by hand. They were finally kicked out of the house when they were strong enough to wrestle the dinner dish away from Dad! The later generations of kids still come by the house, and can be seen on Mr. Bufus' balcony. There is even a picture, somewhere, of one of the raccoons curled up WITH Mr. Bufus in his cat bed!

Pee Eee - I've noticed that humans don't like it when we throw up. Why is that?
It was a good thing that your pawrents saw the raccoon before you went outside.

Oh my, that is almost funny looking. Don't think he cared too much about that Betty Crocker box ;) Hope you feel better Farley!

I agree. I think he might have been sick. Good thing Mom and Dad saw him before they let you go outside.

Hope your tummy is OK! Momma hates waking up to that washing machine sound.

What is wrong with that little critter?

We ended up moving it out to the woods, and aren't sure if something was wrong or not. We checked this morning and he moved on so hopefully he was just really tired - even though it doesn't seem right??

Fiona - that is amazing that Mr. Bufus adopted raccoons! He's a special cat :)

Poor little critter, sounds like he got really really lost. Good thing you went out front in case he was sick.

Let's hope for a less eventful morning tomorrow.
