Training Your Humans: Lesson 11

Lesson 10: When to Play Ball

Humans like to complicate things with rules. I'm here to tell you, it doesn't have to be that complicated! I'm sure you've heard some of these ridiculous statements:

  • It's too early to get up yet.
  • You can't have your dinner at 2:00 in the afternoon.
  • They don't allow dogs at my work.
  • No chocolate bars for puppies.
  • And the dreaded...It's too cold to play ball.

Let's get one thing straight people! Playing ball has NO CONDITIONS. There is never any circumstance on earth that should prevent you from throwing a ball for me to chase! To make this clear, I have complied a list of examples for humans, explaining the perfect time to play ball.

5:00 AM, 11:30 PM, when it's light outside, when it's dark outside. When it's 30 degrees. When it's 100 degrees. Whether you are happy, sad, tired, exhausted, elated, or bored -- that is the perfect time to play ball. On your way to work? Just got home from work? Carrying bags of groceries? PERFECT! Let's play ball!

After five years of training, my Mom finally understands this rule. This morning it was cold, dark and snowing. She got out of the warm and cozy bed when she wanted to sleep in, to go outside and load the fire.

At last she understood it was actually time to play ball!  She even joined in the fun by helping me -- because sometimes it's hard to find the ball when it's dark outside, and when it gets buried in the snow. Mark my words, your humans will eventually catch on too. Be diligent. And PLAY BALL!

Yeah, I have trained my humans too (well, at least momma). It is never too cold or too dark if the Mango decides it is time for action.

Very useful instructions, Farley! I will see if I can print and post these rules as a reminder to my momma!
Say, I am new to your blog and live where it is always hot so forgive my ignorance but why on earth do you have a box of fire in your yard? My momma has a mini box that has fire in it for cooking chickens and such but yours looks too big for that!

Farley, Please come train our Mom! She refuses to play ball when it's raining!!! We're Labs, a bit of rain doesn't bother us!!!

Hi Moose! My humans have the same box you mention that cooks chickens. The outdoor box heats our house. It cooks water, that goes underground and into the house for heat. We don't have natural gas available where we live and propane is too expensive, so the humans needed an alternative :) Take care, Farley

I'm working on it with Mom. She just throws like a girl, so I have to REALLY work on Dad. But Mom is slowly learning that there is never a time that isn't right for playing ball. (Wow that was like a quadruple negative in that sentence.... I guess if I just said that she is slowly learning that ANYTIME can be ball time, that would have been easier, huh?)
